Tech OverloadHow It Should Work
I just noticed a small red icon on the Firefox 1.0 menu bar. It's over on the right side by that. in every browser since forever. gif image that makes it look like something is happening when you ask for a page. Being the curious type I put my mouse over the icon and a 'tool tip' said that there was a critical update available for Firefox. I clicked on the icon and Firefox downloaded and applied a patch.
I did not have to get out of Firefox, I did not have to reboot my machine, I just had to notice the icon. I'm guessing that there could be instances where a reboot would be necessary but not this time.
The simplicity of having the software check for updates, let you know they are there without being annoying, and patching themselves is really a good thing. This is how software should work in the wired/wireless world. Another reason to use Firefox.
