The ArtsThe Edgar Suit

March 21, 2005

The best acting job in Men In Black has to be Vincent D'Onofrio who plays Edgar so well you forget there is an actor inside the Edgar suit. Apparently he is in Law & Order: Criminal Intent which is a show I've never watched but then I'm busy watching Men In Black for about the 100th time.

Vincent D' is also one of my favorite actors, ever since I first saw him in a tv crime drama 2-hour special where he was pinned by a subway to the boarding station in New York, his lower torso sheered off by the train. Two hours they tried to extract him while he slowly died. Remarkable performance. I forget the name of the show, but it won numerous awards -- after the show had been cancelled, unfortunately.

He was also pretty good as that crazy backwoods bayou drug dealer, where, because he had spent so many years snorting coke, he had to wear a prosthetic nose made of shiny metal. (True Romance? Rush? lol, oops, there goes my memory again.)

His performances on Law & Order are often breathtaking, so intense, so absorbed he becomes throwing himself into his roles that some viewers are put off by him personally, unable to separate the man from the actor crafting fictional characters, claiming that he is "creepy." Kind of like the same public snubs and shuns suffered by a shy, mild-mannered Chrisopher Walken, who plays frighteningly ominous roles, but who in real life, wouldn't hurt a fly.

D'Onofrio said Edgar was his favorite role, though the hardest physically because of the painful walk he had created for the character. I love him. I can't wait to see what else he accomplishes in his life. Right now he's working on a private project, which so far I have been unable to locate any information on, maybe a cable tv movie or ...
