Tech OverloadMiFi'd

August 24, 2009

I've had a Sprint broadband USB modem for at least 2 years now. I think I bought it the day the iPhone was released. (Actually, I'm sure about that just too lazy to look back thru the Noded Archives). I've never had any issues with the modem at all. It has served me quite well. It performs inside of conference centers where even cell phone reception is spotty. Today the USB modem is obsolete.

Today I upgraded to Sprint's MiFi modem. The MiFi may be a really bad name but the idea is great. It is a small device almost the exact same size as a credit card. The card contains a Sprint broadband modem (cell phone using Sprints 3G network "where available" sometimes called EVDO), a GPS receiver and a five port WiFi router. This means that you can connect up to 5 devices at once.

It will run about 4 hours off of battery power (40 hour standby time) or you can run it off of the included AC power cord. I would have liked the power cord to be a little smaller but it does have to drop the voltage down to USB so there are some components required. Mrs Noded and I look forward to being able to web surf on our iTouch devices while out at restaurants and such.

The unit is charging up now. I will give you my impressions as I get a few hours of internet browsing when traveling. I have a meet up coming up Thursday night which should give it a work out. In the mean time check out the little movie Sprint put together to introduce the MiFi.
