I'm not sure why I havent tried this before, I've had an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard for quite a while. It has been sitting in the closet not being used for at least 9 months. So to day I've paired it up with my iPad2 and am sitting in the comfy chair writing this post.

One of the advantages the bluetooth keyboard has over the iPad on screen keyboard is arrow keys. Google Drive now allows editing of documents on the iPad so that is another good reason to pair a keyboard with the iPad. The other option i keep considering is dropping another $1k on a MacBook Air. So I think I will see how far I can take this setup. The disadvantage is that the keyboard is on my lap and the iPad is on the left armrest of the comfy chair which is probably not optimal but seems to be working at the moment.
